Gun Saftey Tips

  1. Lock your weapon when not in use, ALWAYS!

  2. Investigate several locking devices before you purchase one to make sure that the lock is appropriate for the age of the children in your house.

  3. Familiarize your spouse or any other adults with your weapons. They may need to make them safe at some point.

  4. Do not try to hide the fact that weapons exist from your child. They do and are dangerous and even though you may disapprove of them, your child may come in contact with guns sooner or later. Be sure they know how to be safe; not curious. THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE A CHILD SHOULD EVER LEARN IF THEY FIND A FIREARM OR SEE A FRIEND PLAYING WITH ONE IS TO LEAVE THE AREA, NOW.

  5. When handling a weapon, always clear it. THAT MEANS EVERY TIME YOU TOUCH IT EVEN IF YOU JUST HAD IT 5 MINUTES AGO. CHECK IT AGAIN!

  6. Always point your weapon in a safe direction. Be aware that a wall is not safe. Someone may be on the other side of it and bullets go through sheet rock!!

  7. Know where your children will be staying. A call to a parent to ask if there are weapons in the house and how they are stored IS appropriate. You may not like the answer and then can make a decision about where your child visits.

  8. If you do not have weapons or do not believe anyone should, remember, others do not think this way. Make that call to your children's friend's home. You would be very surprised at who owns weapons.

  9. Do not try to hide the fact that weapons exist from your child. They do and are dangerous and even though you may disapprove of them, your child will come in contact with weapons sooner or later. Be sure they know how to be safe not curious.

  10. THE ONLY RULE A CHILD SHOULD EVER LEARN IF THEY FIND A WEAPON OR SEE A FRIEND PLAYING WITH ONE IS TO LEAVE THE AREA, NOW.

  11. Impress upon your child that telling an adult about a weapon is not tattling but doing something good that may save his buddies life.

  12. Do not be afraid to ask about your weapon. It may have been handed down or given to you by someone and you may not be fully familiar with it. There are many sportsman's clubs and shooting instructors, along with your local police departments who would be glad to familiarize you with the weapon.

  13. Lock your ammunition in a place that is away from your weapon. They should never be locked together.
